There are always two sides to any story. Two ways of being, thinking, and reacting to the world around us. This duality attracts me to photographing water and rocks. Two seemingly very different substances. One rigid, solid, and unmoving. Steadfast in its ways, unrelenting. The other flows, curling, altering directions at a whim, and adapting and navigating an ever-changing landscape ahead. And yet they each influence each other. They both have a direct impact on the other. These two seemingly very different substances can and do shape one another.
I find this fascinating. Even the slightest trickle of a stream can shape the largest bolder over time. The same can be said of a pebble against a raging river. The change may not be huge, but it is real. Gather enough pebbles together, and the change is dramatic.
This is a metaphor for humanity. The world is constantly changing in all imaginable ways, but we can all influence and change it. This is what draws me in as a subject for my photography. Water and rocks are two very influential substances that make up this planet on which we live. Two seemingly opposite and unrelated elements shape and direct each other, and each relies on the other to get where it needs to be.
