No Small Thing

My reason for photographing nature is primarily to be out in nature, and I don’t often think about why I create the images I do. I honestly love creating an image, and I just look for the things that interest me along the way. I have noticed a recent trend in my photography, however. I have been concentrating on more miniature scenes. The “intimate landscape” is just photographing small parts of a pervasive landscape. It is these diminutive pieces of the surroundings that I am drawn to. It reminds me of a quote,

"Well-being is realized by small steps, but is truly no small thing."

~Zeno

I like his quote for several reasons, but as it pertains to my photography, it reminds me that the small scenes I photograph are part of a greater whole and are not insignificant. The patterns in the bark, the growth of the mushrooms, and the colors in the vegetation, all seemingly minute details, make up the entire landscape around me. These small single parts comprise an entire ecosystem, and I am just standing in the middle. It fills me with awe and appreciation I can’t fully describe. I like this way of approaching photography because it reminds me; everything and everyone has a part to play.  it is no small thing.
